
THE STATE PRIZE-WINNING BAYAN MONGOL BIG BAND
The Bayan Mongol Big Band was founded in 1967 and gave its first public concert on 10 July 1969 under the direction of T.Chimeddorj, composer and Honored Cultural Worker of Mongolia. From that time onward it has provided the conditions and the foundation for the development of Estrada and jazz in Mongolia. Out of this collective have come many of the celebrated singers, instrumentalists, composers and conductors of Mongolian Estrada, whose work has won wide renown.
The Bayan Mongol Big Band works to develop and popularize professional classical jazz at home and to present Mongolian jazz to the world.
Structure and Composition
The conductor of the Bayan Mongol Big Band is S.Saruul-Od Honored Cultural Worker of Mongolia. The Band performs with a complement of 20 musicians, following the standard of the full-size jazz big band: a saxophone section, a trombone section, a trumpet section and a rhythm section.
Repertoire
Alongside arrangements of Mongolian folk songs, songs and instrumental works by Mongolian composers, and music written for feature and documentary films, television, radio, theatre, musicals and children's songs, the Band continues to enrich its repertoire with jazz from the classic eras through to every current and form of contemporary jazz.
Awards
The Band has received many honors, among them second prize at the International Jazz Festival held in the Russian Federation (2000); the Golden Cup for conducting and the Golden Cup for instrumental solo at the "Spring Festival" international festival held by tradition in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (2005); three awards at the "Golden Autumn" music festival; and awards for solo instrumentalists. In 2019 the Band was awarded the State Prize by decree of the President of Mongolia.
Touring
Guest conductors invited to work with the Band have included the Russian jazz composer and conductor V. Smagin; the Cuban conductors Eddy Gaitán, Raimundo Calisdo, Rey Montesinos and Rembers; the Bulgarian conductor Kiril Ekonomov; Martin Zenker and Peter Reiter from Germany; Andreas Marinello from Italy; Paul Tynan from Canada; and Carl Hammond from the United States. The Band has toured Cuba, the Russian Federation, China, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Uzbekistan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Germany.
Recordings
The Bayan Mongol Big Band has recorded and released the records "Bayan Mongol and Soyol-Erdene", "Bayan Mongol", the double album "Bayan Mongol 40", the album "Bayan Mongol", the record "Bayan Mongol 50", the album "The Mongolian Philharmonic", the "Black Album" and the "White Album", as well as music for albums by composers and performing artists.
